intellectually curious
with a passion for social justice

Welcome!

West Denmark Lutheran Church, nestled in the woods of Northwest Wisconsin, stands as a beacon for faith and inclusive community.

The congregation was founded in 1873 by Danish immigrants who were adherents of the teachings and principles of N. F. S. Grundtvig, the 19th-century Danish pastor, theologian, hymn writer, politician, and social innovator.

Grundtvig’s key teachings centered on life enrichment, emphasizing the importance of nature and seeing people as part of nature; sharing oral culture and history through music, poetry, and fellowship; and connecting Christian faith with civic responsibility to live with a passion for social justice and tolerance.

These teachings continue to influence and guide the congregation of West Denmark Lutheran Church today. We are an intellectually-curious congregation, as evidenced in strong preaching, innovative and expressive worship services, an extensive music program with superlative musicians and choir, and a shared sense of the value of social justice with a commitment to “walk humbly, act justly, and love mercy” (Micah 6:8).

West Denmark is proud to be a Reconciling in Christ congregation, respecting the dignity of every human being. Our worship services, preaching, and community-based ministries embody this welcoming message and belief.

And, we love a good party and know how to host one, especially one that celebrates the Danish traditions of excellent food, conversation, music, and games. Radical hospitality, and the positive energy it generates, is a trademark of West Denmark Lutheran Church. We are always looking for and trying new ways to share hospitality and grow in partnerships with the larger community.

About Our Sanctuary Ship

The sailing ship that appears in artwork throughout this website is adapted from a photo of a model ship that hangs in our sanctuary. It’s an old Danish custom.
